The Limestone Conflict

The fight over limestone mining in the ancient Ojnare forest of Gotland, the largest island in Sweden, has become a highly charged, local manifestation of a conflict you find all over the world, a conflict pinning industry and jobs against the environment.

The Limestone Conflict premiered at Gothenburg International Film Festival and had it's North American premiere at Telluride’s Mountainfilm. The film has screened at Environmental Film Festival Australia, Environmental Film Festival in our Nation’s Capital and Frozen River Film Festival. The Limestone Conflict was included in Mountainfilm’s World Tour. Sales representation by Journeyman Pictures.

 This short documentary was shot during director, Petter Ringbom’s residency at the Ingmar Bergman Estate. Support was provided by Film på Gotland, Ingmar Bergman Estate, Baltic Art Center, Region Gotland, and the Swedish Arts Council.

 In “The Limestone Conflict,” we meet three representatives from different sides of the issue that has divided the island. An activist, a miner, and a local land owner tell their stories, and give us a glimpse into why this has become such a divisive conflict.
