Anchored by the dramatic story of “The Spear,” Brett Murray’s caricature of President Zuma, Shield and Spear presents intimate stories about art, music, identity, race and freedom of expression in South Africa 20 years into democracy.

Directed by Petter Ringbom, produced by Alysa Nahmias for Opendox, executive produced by Marquise Stillwell and Christophe Charlier, this feature documentary had its world premiere at Toronto’s Hot Docs, European premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest, African premiere at Durban International Film Festival, and U.S. premiere at Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Sound + Vision.

Shield and Spear won the Silver Price in the film category at UK’s Passion for Freedom Awards. It has screened at major festivals in fourteen different countries. The film has sold to broadcast networks in five countries, and is represented worldwide by Journeyman Pictures.

The Hollywood Reporter gave us a glowing review, Nonfics put us on their list of the 10 Best Music Documentaries of 2014, Toronto’s NOW Magazine gave us 4 “N’s,” LGBT film site, CGiii, gave us their best grade, and the Washington Blade called us, “A powerful and important contribution to a crucial conversation.”
